Kenya National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Has Proposed To Reduce The Average Payout For Renal Dialysis Session

Kenyan has been battling rising cases in deadly disease of which the NHIF has considered reducing the cost of healthcare for dialysis patients. The NHIF is currently at the verge of reducing expenses on major surgeries and diagnostics tests such as MRI and CT scans.

The NHIF is expecting to reduce the average payout for renal dialysis session from $85.90 to $54.05 and this seeks to reduce bills for the weekly procedure by $9,000,900.00 annually to $24,302,430.00.

Furthermore, the maximum cover for MRI scans will be reduced to $86.37 from the current $134.95 per session while settlement of CT scans is set to be reduced to $53.98 from $71.97.

However, there has been a lot of uproars and criticisms from the Kenya’s Renal Society, a lobby for kidney patients which happens to see the plan of the NHIF alarming and therefore urges the Insurance company to rethink of the decision again.

According to John Gikonyo, the president of the association, there has been no consultation with patients, kidney doctors, and dialysis service providers in Kenya, who are all of the opinions that the cost reduction will disrupt and destabilise this life-saving service and that this may result in many patients paying with their lives. The $58.45 payouts would be insufficient even ar the low-cost public hospitals.
