Michelle Rodriguez Cried and Threatened to Quit ‘The Fast and the Furious’ When She Discovered Letty Ortiz’s Original Storyline With Dominic Toretto

However, she almost quit when she disagreed with her character’s story arc. Here’s a look at her character and the storyline that almost made her leave the movie series that shot her to stardom. How Letty and Dom came to be in ‘The Fast and the Furious’??

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Letty Ortiz (Rodriguez) have known each other since childhood and formed a friendship based on their mutual love of cars. They began dating as teenagers and are a couple in the first film, The Fast and the Furious. They work together, stealing high-end electronics and illegally street racing. However, by the end of the first movie, Dom and Letty are torn apart when the police learn of Dom’s criminal activities, and he goes on the run.

The story arc that had Rodriguez saying, ‘I can’t do this in front of millions of people’

Rodriguez revealed that the original script for The Fast and the Furious contained a storyline that involved Letty cheating on Dom with Brian O’Conner, played by the late Paul Walker, leading to a love triangle. Rodriguez was incensed at the mere thought of it. “I basically cried and said, I’m going to quit and, ‘Don’t sue me, please — I’m sorry, but I can’t do this in front of millions of people,’” she told the Daily Beast in 2017. “My whole point in being an actress is that I thought I got to live a dream. And I don’t dream about being a slut! Do you?!”

She wasn’t alone in her thinking of the character arc. Rodriguez said, “Vin was the first one to pull me to the side while I was crying, and he just looked at me and said, ‘I got your back. Chill out and let me handle this, and you’re right — it makes me look bad anyway.’ And there you go. That was the beginning of the Letty fairytale.”

Other Fast & Furious storyline changes

After Paul Walker’s untimely death in 2013, Universal shut down Furious 7 production and took four months to reset. Producers consulted with the cast and crew and moved forward only after all agreed it was time to do so in Walker’s memory. With a rewritten ending that pays tribute to the actor, the seventh installment of the franchise was completed under the direction of James Wan with the help of Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody. Other script changes involve the original film, where the opening scene shows a crew of thieves targeting a truck full of electronics. One of the robbers shoots the truck driver with a tranquilizer gun to subdue him long enough to swipe the goods. However, the original script called for a shotgun. The cast and crew were concerned that the scene would portray the racing community as violent criminals, so producers changed the prop to the tamer tranquilizer gun.

The Fast & Furious franchise has enjoyed immense popularity, spawning nearly a dozen action flicks, a TV series, video games, live shows, and even theme park attractions. That success is mainly due to outspoken actors and crew who raised red flags when needed and attentive writers and directors who listened. If not for the castmates’ love for their characters, the first film might not have sparked an entire franchise.

In a recent interview with Collider,Knightley was asked about the possibility of reprising her role as Elizabeth Swann in the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. She responded by saying that she has not yet been approached about the project, but would definitely consider it if the opportunity arises.

“I don’t know if it’s happening,” Knightley said. “I haven’t heard anything about it. But, you know, I would always be open to the idea of revisiting Elizabeth Swann. It was a huge part of my life and career, and I’m very fond of the character.”

Knightley first appeared as Elizabeth Swann in the original “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” in 2003. She continued to play the character in the following two sequels, “Dead Man’s Chest” and “At World’s End,” before sitting out the fourth installment, “On Stranger Tides.”

While Knightley’s character was not present in “On Stranger Tides,” the film still managed to gross over $1 billion worldwide. The most recent entry in the franchise, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” was released in 2017 and also went on to earn over $794 million globally.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, which has seen its fair share of ups and downs in recent years. Johnny Depp, who played the lead role of Captain Jack Sparrow, was dropped from the series following allegations of domestic abuse. The studio has since announced that it is planning to reboot the franchise with a new cast and crew.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the franchise, Knightley’s potential return to the series would undoubtedly be a welcome sight for fans. Her portrayal of Elizabeth Swann was a key factor in the success of the early “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, and her absence from the later entries was felt by many.

Knightley has remained busy in the years since her last “Pirates” film, taking on a variety of roles in both independent and big-budget productions. She has been nominated for two Academy Awards for her performances in “Pride & Prejudice” and “The Imitation Game,” and has also appeared in films such as “Atonement,” “Anna Karenina,” and “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”

Whether or not Knightley ultimately returns to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, her fans can look forward to seeing her in a variety of upcoming projects. She is set to star in the upcoming biographical drama “Silent Night,” as well as the action thriller “The Essex Serpent
