Scammer Impersonates Johnny Depp, Romances Retiree And Steals $40,000 From Her

Johnny Depp has just received a verdict from a jury where his ex-wife, Amber Heard, has to pay him more than 10 million dollars, and besides, he is an actor who has earned a great fortune along big and very successful films. So it would be complicated for someone like him to have to resort to asking for money.

Well, a retired woman in Brazil did not find it impossible, and was fooled by a swindler posing as Johnny Depp.

Brazilian retiree falls for fake Johnny Depp scam

The Brazilian justice system received a rather strange complaint. A 61-year-old woman gave more than 200 thousand reais (40 thousand dollars) to a man who pretended to be Johnny Depp. The scam took place in Osasco, São Paulo and began to be forged in 2020.

Master scam and pitied the fake Johnny Depp

According to the testimony that the woman presented to the Brazilian laws, at first, the conversations were about“everyday life issues”, but over time, the person who impersonated the actor began to tell “a sad story and that he needed money for the payment of convictions and in cases in which he was involved.”

At that time the life of Johnny Depp, the real one, was going through complicated moments of a domestic violence trial with Amber Heard, and that very thing took advantage of the scammer to cause pity and ask the 61-year-old Brazilian woman for money.

“Along with the sad story of not having money to pay the aforementioned fees, a ‘romance’ began where the scammer promises to take the author (of the lawsuit) to live with him,” lawyer Eduarda Tosi, who represents the victim, told the court.

She believed every word of the fake Depp.

“Pandemic contributed to her believing every lie the scammer told, given the emotional shock she experienced. She was just looking for a way out or a change of life.” According to the lawsuit, the retiree even underwent plastic surgery believing she would be living in Los Angeles, USA with her conquest she had never seen.

The victim confessed that she sold a car and a house to help the scammer. The deposits were made at Banco Brasil into an account that the scammer said belonged to “her lawyer’s Brazilian friend.” The deposits, according to records, were made on November 30, 2020 ($ 15 thousand); December 1, 2020 ($ 40.4 thousand); and December 7, 2020 ($ 153 thousand).

The victim’s daughter detained her mother.

The conversations with the scammer ended when the woman’s son questioned her about the transfers and discovered that she had been the victim of a scam. Faced with this, the 61-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against Banco do Brasil, alleging that the institution allowed a fraudster to open a fraudulent account, “due to lack of maintenance and supervision”.

The bank received part of the blame from the victim.

According to the 61-year-old retiree, the bank is responsible for the service provided to the consumer in frauds committed by third parties. “There was clear negligence on the part of the bank,” she said in court. Banco do Brasil defended itself in the lawsuit arguing that the woman “transferred the securities of her own free will”.

In a recent interview with Collider,Knightley was asked about the possibility of reprising her role as Elizabeth Swann in the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. She responded by saying that she has not yet been approached about the project, but would definitely consider it if the opportunity arises.

“I don’t know if it’s happening,” Knightley said. “I haven’t heard anything about it. But, you know, I would always be open to the idea of revisiting Elizabeth Swann. It was a huge part of my life and career, and I’m very fond of the character.”

Knightley first appeared as Elizabeth Swann in the original “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” in 2003. She continued to play the character in the following two sequels, “Dead Man’s Chest” and “At World’s End,” before sitting out the fourth installment, “On Stranger Tides.”

While Knightley’s character was not present in “On Stranger Tides,” the film still managed to gross over $1 billion worldwide. The most recent entry in the franchise, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” was released in 2017 and also went on to earn over $794 million globally.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, which has seen its fair share of ups and downs in recent years. Johnny Depp, who played the lead role of Captain Jack Sparrow, was dropped from the series following allegations of domestic abuse. The studio has since announced that it is planning to reboot the franchise with a new cast and crew.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the franchise, Knightley’s potential return to the series would undoubtedly be a welcome sight for fans. Her portrayal of Elizabeth Swann was a key factor in the success of the early “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, and her absence from the later entries was felt by many.

Knightley has remained busy in the years since her last “Pirates” film, taking on a variety of roles in both independent and big-budget productions. She has been nominated for two Academy Awards for her performances in “Pride & Prejudice” and “The Imitation Game,” and has also appeared in films such as “Atonement,” “Anna Karenina,” and “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”

Whether or not Knightley ultimately returns to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, her fans can look forward to seeing her in a variety of upcoming projects. She is set to star in the upcoming biographical drama “Silent Night,” as well as the action thriller “The Essex Serpent
